Dynamic Performance Reports

Challenge

A technology company had set an initiative for every employee to enter at least two goals into the performance management system. However, the company’s overall completion rate had stalled at 50%. The system’s interface, combined with the company’s multiple levels of management, made it difficult for the Human Resources department to identify which departments were behind.

Solution

The most important factor in managing an employee’s performance is their manager. Identifying the managers of the lagging teams was the most efficient way to populate the missing goals, and it would ensure the managers were engaged in their employees’ goals from the start.

Knowing this, I used Adobe Flash Builder to develop a report that showed goal completion as pie charts at each level of management. The data for the report came from the performance management system, which I reformatted into XML using VB.Net. The nested structure of the XML data made it easy to create an expandable structure, allowing the HR department to rapidly drill down and identify which managers to contact. The report also included the actual text of the employees’ goals, to ensure they were properly written.

Results

Within a week of receiving this dynamic performance report, the HR department contacted the appropriate managers and drove the company’s goal completion rate from 50% to 95%. At the end of the performance cycle, I provided a similar report to track performance review submissions, which also led to a high completion rate.
